Cock-A-Doodle-Doo!
Forgive me if I strut like a rooster in command of his hens. But today I had a perfect day in the chicken department. I may as well pass out cigars.
My wife and I are a little goofy about animals. Goofy as in we love them. I decided earlier this summer that we would replenish our flocks of Rhode Island Reds and guinea fowl by incubating eggs.
Today was the twenty first day after I put six fresh eggs in the incubator. When I came home from the office this afternoon, we had six new mouths to feed. Two more Reds are pecking their way through their shells as I write this. About twenty guinea fowl will be ready to hatch next week, that is, assuming they were fertile when I placed them in the incubator.
Much rejoicing in the chicken coop tonight. In the larger coop, where the adults go, there was millet for all and a new roost to boot. In the coop for new arrivals, I set a heat lamp, and secured a roosting area from predators. (I hope.)
Whatever happens this week in court, nothing beats the thrill of new life forming. I'll be up early to check on our newest arrivals.
