Mom and Dad as Co-Conspirators?
The family that stays together may do time together. At least that is the suggestion in today's Hartford Courant regarding the sad death of 19-year-old Carlee Wines. The University of Connecticut undergraduate was killed by a hit-and-run driver in January at the university.
Anthony P. Alvino has been charged with a series of crimes. The state alleges that he struck the girl while driving, but failed to stop because he'd been drinking. His girlfriend, a passenger in the car, has been charged with a variety of crimes as well.
But the story appears not to stop there. More arrests are coming. According to the Courant, the young man's parents may well have helped try to cover up their son's role in the death. Alvino's arrest warrant affidavit alleges that the young man's parents traveled to St. Bonaventure College, where Mr. Alvino was a student, and then took the young man and several of his friends to a hotel where they discussed how to keep a lid on things. They DId What?
The most damning accusation is that boy's parents took his car to have body work done on it so that no one would be able to tell it had been involved in the accident.
The allegations are, frankly, shocking. No one wants their child convicted of a crime. But what parent affirmatively assists in concealing or maybe tampering with evidence?
Perhaps none of it is true. The state must prove its case, after all. It is easy to accuse; far harder to convict. But the story is sad. I imagine a family wing in some state facility, with mom, dad and junior as bunkmates.
I can indeed see even normally law-abiding parents acting this way to protect their kid, but the kid's disregard for the law might well have been learned from his parents' example.
I also thought about The Great Gatsby on reading this...

interesting stuff, since the original crime happened in Conn but the "alleged cover up" took place in New York
seems to me that only New York may have jurisdiction over the parents---nothing in the story says the parents ever went or did anything in Conn.
